Strengthening a toddler’s teeth
Here’s a simple and effective guide to help
strengthen your toddler’s teeth
Healthy Diet
A balanced diet supports strong, healthy teeth.
Tooth-friendly foods:
- Calcium-rich foods: Milk, yogurt, cheese, broccoli.
- Phosphorus-rich foods: Eggs, fish, poultry.
- Fruits and veggies: Apples, carrots, celery – they help clean teeth naturally and stimulate gums.
- Whole grains: For overall health and to reduce sugar spikes.
Foods to limit
- Sugary snacks & drinks: Candy, cookies, juices, sodas.
- Sticky foods: Dried fruit or gummies that cling to teeth.
- Frequent snacking: Can lead to more acid exposure on teeth.
Good Oral Hygiene Habits
Start cleaning teeth as soon as they appear.
For ages 0–3:
- Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a smear of fluoride toothpaste (about the size of a grain of rice).
- Brush twice daily – especially before bedtime.
- Start flossing when teeth begin to touch.
Regular Dental Visits
- First dental visit: By age 1 or within 6 months of first tooth.
- Follow-ups every 6 months or as recommended.
- Dentist may recommend fluoride treatments or sealants for added protection.
Fluoride is Key
- Fluoridated water helps strengthen enamel and prevent cavities.
- Ask your pediatrician or dentist about fluoride supplements if your water isn’t fluoridated.
Avoid Baby Bottle Tooth Decay
- Don’t let your toddler fall asleep with a bottle of milk, juice, or formula.
- Only water should be offered if a bottle is needed at bedtime.
Bonus Tips
- Let your toddler pick their own toothbrush to make brushing fun.
- Use songs or timers to help brush for 2 full minutes.
- Model good brushing habits – brush your teeth with them.
